State Standards

Sutter County Superintendent of Schools Outdoor School Program at Shady Creek Alignment with California State Science Standards for Grades 5 and 6

The Outdoor School Curriculum centers around three key concepts. These concepts are presented the first day and are reinforced throughout the week. These concepts also represent a “springboard” from which other concepts and standards are addressed.

Changes (all things in nature change and these changes can be divided between natural and man-made).
Adaptations (all living things have adaptations that help them to survive).
Relationships (all living things have relationships with other biotic as well as abiotic components).

Eco-Kid (while this in itself is not a scientific concept, encouraging students to consider how their own actions impact the environment—positive and negative—we provide a platform for them to tie their learning directly to their own lives).
The first letter of each concept creates the word “CARE” intentionally as a reminder for students to care about what they learn and their own actions. It also reminds staff to provide students with an enriching and caring environment.

Changes: For sixth grade this concept directly relates to Standard 1, Plate Tectonics, Standard 2, Shaping the Earth’s Surface, Standard 5, Ecology, Standard 6, Resources, Standard 7, Investigation and Experimentation. For fifth grade the direct relation is to Standard 1, Physical Science (particularly as it relates to sub-sections a- d and f- g), Standard 2, Life Sciences (particularly as related to sub-sections e-g), Standard 3, Earth Sciences, Standard 6, Investigation and Experimentation.

Adaptations: For sixth grade this concept directly relates to Standard 5, Ecology. For fifth grade this concept directly relates to Standard 2, Life Sciences.

Relationships: For sixth grade Standard 5 , Ecology, Standard 6, Resources, and Standard 7, Investigation and Experimentation. For fifth grade this concept directly relates to Standard 2, Life Sciences, Standard 6, Investigation and Experimentation.

Eco-Kid: For sixth grade Standard 6, Resources. For fifth grade Standard 3, Earth Sciences (particularly as it relates to sub-sections d and e).
