Evening Programs at Shady Creek Outdoor School are designed to heighten student awareness and appreciation for the natural world at night, to help them explore the delicate balances in nature, and to have fun. A typical week at Shady Creek includes the following programs:

Monday night: Stars and Owls. This program is used as a fun way to prepare students for night hikes. After some fun songs, teachers perform a short play that introduces students to some of the constellations they will see on their night hikes. Naturalists follow this with a bat presentation that includes an amazing bat costume, songs, humor and fun. Owls, both live and in pictures are next. Students will learn the calls, adaptations, and habitats of several different owls. This program concludes with a quiet closing song.

Tuesday Night: Night Hike. Naturalists and teachers lead cabin groups into the night to discover the sights, sounds, and beauty of nature. A typical night hike will include star lore, viewing of constellations, activities designed to study nocturnal animals, and a visit to one of our ponds to look for signs of animals. The nigh hike is often sited by students as their favorite activity of the week.

Wednesday Night: Endangered Species. Utilizing a traditional campfire style program, the Naturalists teach with fun songs, skits and stories. This exciting program seeks to teach knowledge and inspire caring about endangered species, the importance of habitat, and biodiversity.

Thursday Night: Fun Night. Named “Fun Night” by students, this program is a combination of traditional dance, modern dance, and a few dances unique to Shady Creek. Naturalists lead this program and create an atmosphere where all students truly have fun. It’s a “dance” like no other and even shy students are quickly drawn into the fun.
