There is a rich heritage of the Maidu people in the mountains in and around Shady Creek Outdoor School. For hundreds of years the Maidu people lived here and left a legacy. Their knowledge of the land and ability to live in harmony with the natural world provide an excellent learning opportunity for students to help them understand their connection to the natural environment. The Shady Creek Outdoor School program utilizes what we know of the Maidu and of other Native American peoples as a way to help students gain a more full understanding of the environment.

Focal points of the Native American studies program are the Indian Room and Tipi. At each of these locations students have a hands-on experience where they participate in games, stories, food preparation, fire making and other activities. By utilizing materials made from nature, the students learn how the Native American people lived and learn lessons that are relevant to our lives today.
