Each day at breakfast and dinner two cabin
groups gather at the dining hall to compile a weather report that is
presented during the meal. These students are provided a small class
time at the Shady Creek Weather Station where they learn how to read each
of the instruments and what each reading means. From there readings are
taken, a forecast is determined, and a weather report is given to the
students and faculty attending Shady Creek. Students, counselors and
teachers then plan their day based of expected weather conditions and
make any adjustments to classes based on weather conditions.
These daily weather reports are an important part of every student's
experience. Here each of them has a learning opportunity and a chance to
make a brief presentation in front of a large group. This for many
represents the first such opportunity to make such a presentation and
for all students the class helps to demystify the weather and the terms
associated with it.
The weather is also studied during the Earth Processes Class, Forest
Ecology, and Pond Ecology.
