By its very nature the program at Shady Creek Outdoor School is all about a healthy lifestyle. The active schedule demands that students be up and moving from breakfast to bedtime and is packed with hiking, active play, and sports. Interspersed through this active day are three square meals (tied to State and Federal nutrition guidelines), and an afternoon snack including fresh fruit.

Students at Shady Creek often are experiencing a sit down family style meal for the first time. Opportunity is taken through song and direct instruction to express to students not only where their food comes from, but the benefits of eating healthy. An emphasis is also given to drinking plenty of water (indeed, this is one of the "rules of Shady Creek), and for getting plenty of rest and dressing properly. Over the course of the week, students learn to act independently to ensure that they are adequately prepared for their active days.

Healthy lifestyles are also studied during the Native American Class, Survival Class, and Communities Class. As all classes involve actively hiking or participating in activities that require walking, running, or jumping, all that is taught at Shady Creek involves healthy lifestyles to one degree or another.
