All Socioeconomic Groups
Sutter and Yuba Counties are home to one of the most diverse
populations in California. Home to over 25 distinct languages and ethnic
groups, this region is a model of how diversity of people can make for a
rich community. At Shady Creek Outdoor School we celebrate the diversity of
the students we serve. Our doors are open to all and where possible, we
encourage students to add to the learning process with their own
cultural information.
Special Needs
Shady Creek Outdoor School is completely accessible to all students
regardless of need. For those with physical disabilities, the facilities
are completely handicapped accessible. Students with other special
medical needs are assisted by a Registered Nurse (on campus 24 hours a
day), and students with behavioral needs are accommodated with a rich
hands-on learning environment.
How to apply for assistance
Sometimes students are limited in their ability to attend due to
financial constraints. For this reason, the Shady Creek Outdoor Education
Foundation exists. Those needing assistance should contact their home
school directly as the Shady Creek Outdoor Education Foundation provides
limited funding directly to schools for this purpose. The Foundation is
also a resource for fundraising ideas for schools.

Efforts being made to assist needy students
In addition to the Shady Creek Outdoor Education Foundation (link),
Shady Creek Outdoor School has been involved in efforts to gain funding for
such programs on a statewide basis. In 1999 Shady Creek Outdoor School
staff assisted in a successful effort to provide some funding for needy
students to attend outdoor school programs. The State set aside a one
time fund of $1.5 million for this purpose (AB 1498). Subsequent
efforts have involved work with the Sierra Club Foundation-in 2000 a grant was
secured to fund 4th grade programs at Shady Creek; and, most recently, the Sierra
Club has introduced "Inside the
Outdoors" which is a partnership with Orange County Sheriff Corona and other
groups designed to help bring funding to programs like Shady Creek Outdoor School.
